It's at Govans
It's at Govans: A Collaborative Music Video Project, 2010
By: Christopher Metzger and Ysem Brown
Metzger and Brown are at it again. With the assistance of students enrolled in my Computer Graphics II course at Morgan State University, we took over Govans Elementary School, working with fourth and fifth grade students to produce our latest music video, It's at Govans. As part of their curriculum, Morgan students taught stop motion animation and video production to the Govans students, taking on the role of teacher rather than student for a change. The song is another original, written by Brown and performed by students in his choir.
As artists and educators, we believe in the trans formative power of art and technology and the importance of media literacy in the 21st century. By empowering Baltimore City youth to become media producers rather than consumers, it's our hope that they'll become more critical of the media they encounter on a day to day basis.
Shout out to the homies for once again blessing us with their presence, MICA Foundation Faculty member Jenna Frye and MICA alum Rassaan Hammond. Also gotta thank Kelli Williams for taking over the editing responsibilities when the project needed to get done. Gracias!
